The LCDP Individual Development Plan (IDP)

Please note that an LCDP IDP should answer the questions posed in the LCDP IDP, but DOES NOT need to be written in this table format. Rather, participants are encouraged to use a format that works best for them. It may be too cumbersome to use the table format if one is adding a lot of text.

The LCDP IDP is a personal action plan, jointly agreed to by a participant and his or her supervisor that clarifies one’s developmental goals during the 18-month program. The IDP also identifies the training and other developmental experiences needed to achieve those goals, for the benefit of the individual and organization, within a specified time frame.

Each IDP is intended to be uniquely tailored to the needs of the individual and the organization. The IDP employs a concept that emphasizes discussion and joint decisions by the employee and the supervisor, with input from the mentor and possibly the LCDP Peer Advisor.

Suggestion from former participant David Hastings regarding the IDP (member of the first graduating class):

"Since the LCDP is not an official certificate course, we need to have ECQ's (Executive Core Qualification Statements) that engage the folks reviewing every SES application that we write. I started working on mine as soon as I found enough to work with. Most of that information is available on SES website. Since Individual Development Plans are keyed to ECQ's, the best way to develop your IDP is to write your ECQ's and sense what is weak. I didn't discover this until half-way through my LCDP."
